Adagio for Strings - Lament for Kosovo by Betty Beath

Score

Written originally for manodlins and later for piano, the composer believed that the work needed the warmth and voice of strings to commuinicate the Lament for Kosovo but also for the suffering of those in the East Timor conflict. For violin 1, 2, viola, cello and double bass.

Two years ago it became apparent that there was a need for new piano works which represented contemporary Australian composers.  Wirripang approached its composers who, with their magnificient response, produced so many excellent works. 46 compositions were finally chosen, edited and critiqued by Katie Zhukov, and were embodied in three albums of sheet music each accompanied by a CD of the pieces recorded by Katie. 
It was from these recordings by Katie that this CD evolved. It is a collection of very pleasant, listenable and varied piano music and representative of the very high standard of work being written by Wirripang Australian composers.

Bass Clarinet solo, c.1'45. Grade 5 AMEB List C 2009
The Clarinet has an opportunity to experiment with colour and timbre. It is a transposed score and when played by the Bass Clarinet it will sound a ninth lower than it appears here and for the B flat Clarinet it will sound just a tone lower. It is a short, bright, lively little piece with a middle section which gives opportunity for the production of warm, smooth, flowing tone.

This piece was written for Allan Von Schenkel?s instrument, the Solo Bass, tuned one fourth higher than the orchestra bass. "I do this", he said, "because it has a colorful solo voice with a wide range and because it removes many of the technical limitations of the bass" and "I read music at the sounding pitch like the cello".  From a Lake of Honey is a piece which might 'sing'.
