Clarinet in Bb and piano, c.3'30, Grade 7
The piece is full of 'joie de vivre' and a sense of 'the comical'. At times it could even suggest a Punch and Judy situation with its 'comic mystery' effects created by sudden silences and punctuations. Jazz rhythmic and harmonic features often manifest. The clarinet leaps about gymnastically: sometimes dissolving into quasi-cadenza passages. The piano complements with off-beat rhythmic accompanimental utterances and synchronised chordal 'punches'.

The first movement has flowing melodic modal lines alongside dissonant stabbing harmonies. The second comprises quickly-changing tempi plus instrumental arguments and counter-arguments. The finale highlights frequent character-changes including playfulness and counterpoint against thick homophonic stabbings.
