After studying composition with Brenton Broadstock, Andrew worked as a trumpet player and pianist in the commercial scene for many years. Upon winning the Qantas Youth Award of the Paul Lowin Prize, he travelled to New York to study with Broadway arranger and musician Ian Finkel, and to London for lessons with John McCabe. He has also won the Corbould Composition Prize, been commended for the Albert H. Maggs Award, and won awards for his songs from the National Songwriting Contest. Andrew has been chosen as a participant in the Australian Composer’s Orchestral Forum, and was Composer-in-residence at the 2014 Sydney International Brass Festival.
Classical composition has gone hand in hand with brass band music, with many commissions and performances across Australia. Andrew’s solo works have also been set as test pieces for brass band championships. Educational music has also featured with many school, publishers and organizations widely disseminating Andrew’s music.
Commercially Andrew’s corporate music has been heard on videos, TV and radio in commercials, short film scores and corporate events. He has also arranged orchestral backing music for several albums by various artists.
Recent concert-hall commissions include an Australia Council grant for piano sonata Spring Music for Melbourne performer Natasha Lin, The Pioneer (based on Heidelberg School paintings) for guitarist Ken Murray, and Concertino for solo tuba and wind band, premiered at the São João Festival in Portugal, by Sérgio Carolino and the Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa. Recent CD releases include a euphonium piece for Matt Van Emmerik, and Ensemble Three on the Tall Poppies label.
