Peter Dart

Peter Dart was born in Sydney in 1953. He studied clarinet from the age of 11 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Thomas White, and later with Gabor Reeves. In the 1970s Peter played casually with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Elizabethan Theatre Trust Orchestra (now the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra). From 1979 to 1986 he held a position as clarinetist and saxophonist with the Queensland Theatre Orchestra (later the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra). Peter has also had a career in teaching, tutoring clarinet and woodwind ensembles at the University of Queensland from 1980 to 1986, and as Director of Music at Trinity Grammar School in Sydney (1987 to 1998).
As a composer, Peter studied with Richard Meale from 1967 to 1968. He also studied with Peter Sculthorpe and Georg Tintner. Although he began writing in a post-war serialist style, he has since developed a personal style that aims at immediacy of expression and the exploration of modal and extended tonalities.
Peter completed his doctor of Philosophy in Music, through the University of Queensland, in 1997. He also has a Master of Divinity, and currently works in a Chinese church in the northern suburbs of Sydney.
