Prelude & Scherzo is composed with a tone row designed to sound tonal and is intended to be performed as one piece. After a short introduction, the Prelude moves into a lively two part composition with a small cadenza before ending with a codetta. Scherzo features a steady undercurrent of rhythmic notes shared between right and left hands, with sharp accents and melodic notes sounding clearly above.
