Heavy Rock Metal Dancer meet the BaroQ Bear, The
By Gina Ismene Chitty
Regular price
$40.00
For piano, harpsichord, drums and cymbals, c.4'00
The BaroQ Bear is a character from the Grunewald (Green Forest) in Berlin of the the early 1700s. He habitually composes preludes, fugues and toccatas in abundance, conjecturing what he perceives as logical, balanced tonal relationships and brilliantly opposing thematic arguments. He time-travels to the twenty-first century and has an encounter with a long-haired young man carrying an electric guitar. He is astounded by the young man’s nonchalant demeanor.
As the young man begins to play rock music on his guitar, the Bear becomes increasingly perturbed by the illogical harmonic nuances in his musical output.
He seemed to be hammering out the same few notes and making a metallic noise which the BaroQ bear perceived as irritating and tediously wearisome. He speaks to the young man slowly and explains the logic of counterpoint, and a better way to create good music. The two of them play together, each in his own way, and finally, after a lengthy narration from the BaroQ bear, they merge and settle the score in an amicable manner.

Hebraic Elegy
By Linda Phillips
Regular price
$35.00
Violin and piano, c.9'00. Professional standard
This is a virtuosic work for violin and piano. It had never been published previously and on the manuscript, there was no composition date. As its title suggests the work belongs to those composed in a Jewish style in which Phillips established herself as one of the leading composers in Australia in the twentieth century. The work is in ternary form and characterised by an interplay of melodies between the two instruments.
Edited by Jeanell Carrigan.
Recorded by Goetz Richter, violin and Jeanell Carrigan, piano on What Secret Hath the Rose? Wirr 120 availble online.

The Hercules Close Stomp is written in a light and breezy style that could be played by people of any age. Included are of the scales and harmonies that will remind you of music by Gershwin and Weill. The piece should be played with a light swing in the quaver passages. Performers should feel free to add spontaneous

The piece is full of 'joie de vivre' and a sense of 'the comical'. At times it could even suggest a Punch and Judy situation with its 'comic mystery' effects created by sudden silences and punctuations. Jazz rhythmic and harmonic features often manifest. The clarinet leaps about gymnastically: sometimes dissolving into quasi-cadenza passages. The piano complements with off-beat rhythmic accompanimental utterances and synchronised chordal 'punches'.

Heroic Elegy
By Miriam Hyde
Regular price
$250.00
For Orchestra, c.8'30-9'00
The Heroic Elegy is so called because it was written for a friend whose husband, a distinguished Major-General, was killed in a London accident in 1933. It has, in parts, a military suggestion recalling his career. There is a trumpet call, reminiscent of the battlefield, which emerges early in the score after an announcement in unison by four horns above tremolando strings. Quieter interludes in E and F major (in the latter case a flute solo with harp and strings) give a suggestion of hope, or pleading for recovery, but this is swept away by a re-statement in F minor, marked tragicamente, and grief becomes intense.

Hexagonal Etude Augmentations
By Gina Ismene Chitty
Regular price
$20.00
For solo piano, c.8'30 Advanced level of difficulty. Composed 2021
Chosen for the Preliminary Round Recital in the International Piano Competition 2023 as a new Australian work.
Hexagonal Etude Augmentations opens with octaves and unfolds as approximately eight and a half minutes of unbroken music. There are many motivic ideas, the first, a jagged sparse and forceful opening theme in octaves which is followed by virtuosic passages built upon figural, motivic, rhythmic and technical flourishes that typically existed in nineteenth century etudes. Only fleetingly though, as passages that play on augmented intervals and octaves appear again and again, interspersed with technical innovations of a more contemporary style. The octaves and intervals sometimes dwell around hexagonal note formations, while the climactic cascading semiquavers interspersed with the augmented intervals transform into expressive cluster chords and complex rhythmic structures.
This is a technically demanding and virtuosic piece that requires precision of touch, a driving energy and vibrance.
