Immortality

SATB choir and piano. c.4'00Based on the poem "Music" by Juhan Liiv (1864-1913). The English version of “Muusika”, from Snow Drifts, I Sing: Selected Poems edited by Jüri Talvet, was translated from Estonian by Jüri Talvet and H. L. Hix (Guernica Editions, 2013). The translators kindly permitted use of the poem for “Immortality,” citing Liiv’s own tragic ending: “Juhan Liiv was a peasant, and the circumstances of his death were unfortunate. This work is a memorial to Gareth Chan (1969-2016), the beloved pianist for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir (SGLC), who died tragically at a very young age.

Impromobile

Piano for four hands, c.4'20
The composer coined the term "impromobile" to combine the idea of the musical mobile (a series of musical fragments that can be played in any order at the discretion of the performer) with the idea of improvisation. In this work the performers are each presented with ten short musical fragments and instructed to play at least eight of them in any order and to extend them all by improvisation. The performers are advised to analyse the work (both primo and secondo parts) in order to assist with the process of improvisation and facilitate ensemble coherence.
