Music for the Salon Trio - CD

By Jeanell Carrigan

Regular price $25.00 Sale

Goetz Richter (violin), Minah Choe (cello), Jeanell Carrigan (piano)

Four piano trios for violin, cello and piano by
Iris de Cairos-Rego, Mirrie  Hill,  Frank Hutchens and Alfred Hill

On the 23rd of October 1911, the recently formed Salon Trio gave their first recital at the St. James Hall in Sydney. The players were Miss Dorothy Curtis, violin, Miss Florence E. Brown, ‘cello and Miss Mirrie Solomon [Hill], piano. This was a significant occasion because it marked the presentation of a new chamber music ensemble consisting of piano, violin, and cello, playing compositions of a genre not yet extensively explored in Australia. The program consisted of trios by Schott, Vidor, Grieg and Mendelssohn . At the time Sydney did not have a strong chamber music tradition and there are no reviews or notifications of any other permanent piano trio to be found. This was an all-female group of instrumentalists, performing in a public venue, also highly unusual. However, over time the pianists were replaced by Iris de Cairos-Rego, then Frank Hutchens (who was a good friend of Alfred Hill) and so these three pianists, also composers, wrote pieces for the trio., as did Alfred Hill.

Two pianos and pre-recorded stereo electronics, c.10'00

The source material of the electronic part is derived from a recording of a performance of "Night "and "Breathless Lover". It was manipulated using the Pro Tools software. The piano parts are based on musical material and techniques used in both of those pieces as well, with a particular concentration on imitative techniques that were hinted at in both works, but not as fully explored as they are in this one. Both works published by Wirripang.

Music from a Quiet Place

By Betty Beath

Regular price $20.00 Sale

Solo piano, c.5'30.  Grade: Diploma

Music from a Quiet Place is a contemplative piece inspired by my own surroundings. There is often dialogue between the hands, which, to my mind is a conversation between man and woman. From my window I see a mini rainforest in which there is always melody. Murmuring bamboos reach for the sun and tall trees attract a delightful array of singing birds. Colour, contrast, energy, vitality and a spirit of contemplation, were the elements I sought to express in this ‘musical landscape’. An excellent piece for developing musicality and sensitivity of touch!
Composed 2010

Edited and recorded by Katie Zhukov for the Australian Women Composers' Piano Anthology, Volume I  available online https://youtu.be/TwW7otAR8No

Music in Brisbane and the QSO

    By Patrick Thomas

    Regular price $20.00 Sale

Personal pieces of a large jigsaw.

Recollections of the author's early years in Brisbane and the music scene post WWII.

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Brisbane's wider music scene have contributed significantly to Australia's cultural development and many noteworthy and progressive things happened over the years with several early innovations that were well ahead of their time. Among these were Queensland Government's establishment of two professional String Quartets; the State Opera Scheme; and its contribution to the new QSO which, when born in 1947, was only the second such fulltime Australian Orchestra of symphonic strength.  These and many more cultural achievements are discussed in this book.
