Mysterious Flowers

Piano soloThe first movement burst into bloom, so to speak, from a discarded fragment I had composed years earlier in 1979 while I was trying to get ideas for a short ensemble piece written as a fiftieth birthday tribute to Peter Sculthorpe.
The second movement, dedicated to Ross Edwards, also sprung unexpectedly from material that had lain dormant for some time. The initial chordal idea, and the mysterious tones spread right across the keyboard, were left over textures from my Three Meditations for Dane Rudhyar (1984); and the high arpeggiated chordal idea is a mutation of the call of the magpie lark,...
The third movement, dedicated to Lucinda (aka Helen) Edwards, appeared from nowhere like a desert flower after a storm. I was improvising at Lucinda's piano in Paddington, while I was waiting for a delayed flight to Bali, when the piece materialised from the tones of Messiaen's second mode of limited transposition (also known in jazz theory as the diminished scale).

A cycle of six songs for soprano and piano.
The 2009 Dorian Le Galliene Prize commissioned work.
The poetry of Sappho has come to us, down through the centuries, primarily through three means: 1) one complete poem, 2) fragments surviving on papyrus, and 3) citation by other authors in instances where the original has been otherwise lost. We know also of a few other lost works which were mentioned by other writers but not quoted, leaving us with the knowledge of their existence but nothing of their content.
The poetry in this cycle is drawn from citations (Stars Around the Full Moon and Lady Dawn) and fragments (Beautiful Things). Two of the texts (The Moon Has Set, and Sweet Oil) are the result of combining citations with fragmentary texts of similar theme and tone. The brackets indicate places where the text has been lost.
In composing Mythweaver, I wanted to find a way of depicting these lost words, or to put it another way, this voice whose words have been lost. Wanting neither to simply ignore the gaps in the text nor to force upon the singer and listener text that wasn’t Sappho’s, I sought a third option. (Kevin March)

Three movement symphonic suite for piano and orchestra. c.40'00
Three Faces of Addiction. Composed 2014.
The work focuses on the dilemma of addiction. The overriding tragedy of this malady is denial, and the absolute obsession that one day, the sufferer will gain control over their problem. The insanity of doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result, is at the core of addiction. To illustrate this the composer has deliberately stayed in the home key throughout the entire work, to emphasise this aspect of addiction and create a “tragic soundscape”.
Conductor's score includes a CD of the work performed by The Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra.
