Rainforest Toccata

By Wendy Hiscocks

Regular price $18.00 Sale

Piano solo,  c.3'30".  Grade - L.Mus.

The opening section reflects the echoing acoustic and atmosphere of the ‘Devil’s Coachhouse’ near the entrance to the Jenolan Caves in New South Wales, at the start of that lovely walk through the bush where one can watch rock wallabies at dusk. The other general inspiration is the sounds and scents of Australian rain forests.

Rajas (cello)

By Michael Hannan

Regular price $20.00 Sale

Solo cello, c.9'00.  Grade AMus

The title refers to one of three gunus, or forces, in Hindu culture. Of the other two, sattwa embodies all that is pure and fine, the essence of the ideal state to be attained; and tamas is associated with heaviness and resistance, an obstacle to the realisation of sattwa.  Rajas is the active principle, embodying restlessness and passion, and is the way in which tamas is overcome.

Rajas (viola)

By Michael Hannan

Solo viola, c.9'00.

These concepts informed the composition of my solo cello piece, Rajas for cello alone.

Rakali

By Linda Dalgliesh

Regular price $15.00 Sale

Suite for unaccompanied clarinet, c.7'50

This suite of six short pieces is a tribute to the life of the Rakali (Hydromys chrysogaster), a native rodent of Australian rivers, wetlands and coastal areas. The rakali resembles an otter, having partially webbed hind feet and water-repellent fur, and is a strong swimmer. The nimble and richly-textured Clarinet in Bb is aptly suited for a depiction of this mammal’s life cycle.

The pieces describe, in turn, a hungry rakali moving stealthily at dusk along the shoreline, searching for shellfish and crabs; a young rakali exploring the reedbeds and tree roots under the watchful eye of its mother; the well-fed rakali family returning to their burrow to sleep; a battle-scarred old rakali basking in the sun while listening to the calls of stonecurlews; a rakali pair playing hide-and-seek (perhaps courting?); and a lone rakali swimming in a creek.

The manuscript was given to Paul Paviour as part of a collection of works from the family of a deceased relative.  Its history, and author, are unknown.  However, “it is part of Australia’s history, the Australian troops held out in Tobruk in 1941/42 and did a magnificent job and should be commemorated”.
