Modified double bass and piano, tuned A D G C, c.4'00This piece was written for Allan Von Schenkel's instrument, the Solo Bass, tuned one fourth higher than the orchestra bass. "I do this", he said, "because it has a colorful solo voice with a wide range and because it removes many of the technical limitations of the bass" and "I read music at the sounding pitch like the cello". From a Lake of Honey is a piece which might 'sing'. Quartet for mixed ensemble - flute, violin, horn, cello, c.18'00The work takes its title from a lyric of Little Gidding, in T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets. This poem inspired and nourished the composer during the creation of the work. It did this because it speaks eloquently of the creative process itself: tumult; achievement and loss; and mystery. And it did so because the exploration of Time and Eternity is evocative and compelling and seems to address the heart of the mystery of being. To find a musical representation of this interplay and co-existence between “the timeless and time” was a principal inspiration for this work.

Solo Bass Clarinet in Bb, c.5'40. Grade A.Mus.AAMEB Manual List D, Level 3 Licentiate
The title derives in part from the work "Journey to Horseshoe Bend", which was composed just before this work. The third section of that work is set in a desolate landscape of red cliffs and burnt rocks known as "Fire Country" in Aranda Aboriginal mythology. The bass clarinet perhaps evokes the desolate quality of a landscape after fire.
