Letters from a Black Snake

By Jeanell Carrigan

Regular price $25.00 Sale

Songs by George Palmer and Ralph Vaughan Williams
Barry Ryan (baritone) and Jeanell Carrigan (piano)

Letters from a Black Snake [1-5] are based on words written in letters by Ned Kelly himself. Set masterfully by George Palmer providing a sympathetic picture of Ned Kelly as a literate, much-maligned and wronged, intelligent and sensitive man. The song cycle was commissioned by Ernst & Young, in 2007, to mark the opening of a major retrospective of the works of Sidney Nolan, who identified himself with Kelly and painted a series of pictures of episodes in Kelly's saga.

The first of the five songs is a short note written by Ned at the age of 15, seeking the help of a police sergeant in finding work and introduces himself as the persona ‘the black snake’ which is how the townspeople are beginning to characterise him.  The last is a letter to the Governor of Victoria, written hours before Ned was hanged, in which Ned asks for the release of his mother from prison and requests that he be buried in consecrated ground. The letters reveal Ned as an intelligent and resourceful man, despite a lack of formal education. He can be lyrical, even poetic, and the next moment almost incoherent with rage.
Cloudstreet [6-7] is a novel written in 1991 by Tim Winton. It tells the story of two families from working class backgrounds, the Pickles and the Lambs who happen to live together in a house in Perth, called Cloudstreet, over a period of twenty years.
Figures from an Urban Landscape [8-10]. A cycle of three songs depicting the city and suburbs of Sydney. Words by well renowned poets - Judith Wright, Bruce Dawe and Kenneth Slessor.
Songs of Travel [11-19], composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams to poems from the Robert Louis Stevenson collection of Songs of Travel and Other Verses, is a cycle of nine songs for baritone voice and piano.
CD cover painting by Sidney Nolan Death of Sergeant Kennedy at Stringybark Creek, 1946. 91 x 121.7 cm.  National Gallery of Australia, Canberra with permission.

Miss Lucy Havens requests - CD

By Diana Weston

Regular price $25.00 Sale

Music-making in the homes of early Australian settlers

Danielle Grant soprano, Tara Hashambhoy violin, Angus Ryan cello, Lucy Cormack cello, Diana Weston harpsichord, square piano

This album is made up largely of material derived from a portfolio labelled ‘Lucy Havens’, part of a large sheet music collection in the keep of Sydney Living Museums. The collection, donated by Stuart Symonds, comprises upwards of 2500 individual songs and pieces that were an integral part of domestic life in colonial Australia. The music within the ‘Lucy Havens’ portfolio is of unexpectedly good quality, highly listenable and enjoyable. Taken with the whole, it is also important as an historical entity - as an insight into the society, entertainment and culture of people in the early years of colonization.

Lucy Havens (1804-1867) was born in Monimail, Fife in Scotland, and moved to Whitehaven, Cumberland in the north of England before migrating to Sydney with her family in 1839.  She married twice, the first in 1850 to a former convict and successful businessman Thomas Hyndes.  Following his death in 1855, to a Scottish Presbyterian minister, William Purves.

Movement CD

By Horace Keats

Regular price $25.00 Sale

Vocal and Chamber Music by Horace Keats (1895-1945), performed by soprano Louise Page and pianist Phillipa Candy and The Linden String Quartet formed with artists from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra - Marina Marsden and Emily Long (violins), Justine Marsden (viola), Elizabeth Neville (cello), as well as Janet Webb (flute).
This CD of Keats' music presents the opportunity to demonstrate that his compositions extended beyond songs written for voice and piano, for which he is so well known, and that his musical output is far broader than people know and so is worthy of attention.
The performance by these outstanding musicians displays colour and sensitivity with rare musical intuition in interpreting this fine composer.
Sheet music available.

Music for the Salon Trio - CD

By Jeanell Carrigan

Regular price $25.00 Sale

Goetz Richter (violin), Minah Choe (cello), Jeanell Carrigan (piano)

Four piano trios for violin, cello and piano by
Iris de Cairos-Rego, Mirrie  Hill,  Frank Hutchens and Alfred Hill

On the 23rd of October 1911, the recently formed Salon Trio gave their first recital at the St. James Hall in Sydney. The players were Miss Dorothy Curtis, violin, Miss Florence E. Brown, ‘cello and Miss Mirrie Solomon [Hill], piano. This was a significant occasion because it marked the presentation of a new chamber music ensemble consisting of piano, violin, and cello, playing compositions of a genre not yet extensively explored in Australia. The program consisted of trios by Schott, Vidor, Grieg and Mendelssohn . At the time Sydney did not have a strong chamber music tradition and there are no reviews or notifications of any other permanent piano trio to be found. This was an all-female group of instrumentalists, performing in a public venue, also highly unusual. However, over time the pianists were replaced by Iris de Cairos-Rego, then Frank Hutchens (who was a good friend of Alfred Hill) and so these three pianists, also composers, wrote pieces for the trio., as did Alfred Hill.
