Piano Progressions Anthology One

48 piano works by Wirripang-published, Australian composers.
New repertoire for Piano Progressions was commissioned from Australian male and female composers to celebrate 10 years since the release of Wirripang Australian Piano Anthology in 2011. The first anthology consisted of three books, with 46 new works from Grade One to Diploma level. The success of this publication had led to two Australian Women Composers’ Anthologies in 2015 and 2019 and a third in 2021, all aiming at intermediate-to-advanced piano students. The feedback from teachers indicated the need for more repertoire at beginner-to-intermediate level, resulting in the two books of Piano Progressions that provide fresh teaching materials from Preliminary to Grade 6 level.

Chosen for the Preliminary Round Recital in the Sydney International Piano Competition 2023 as a new Australian work. Performers are at liberty to choose any two of the three movements to suit the time requirements of the competition.
The mix of dark and dangerous elements with fantasy and beauty is what has made fairy-tales and myths so compelling and enduring as universal teaching tales all over the world. The old tale of The Red Shoes has been told in various versions, in many lands. This is Clara Pinkola Estés' telling and analysis of it in Women Who Run with the Wolves. The composition The Reckoning is a psychic narrative inspired by the tale which may pique our curiosity about human nature and behaviour.
The music progresses through three main phases, each conjuring a series of shifts in the psychic and emotional states of the story's protagonist as events unfold towards the ultimate reckoning. This legend recounts the adventures of Ahmed, a young Moorish prince from Granada who ultimately wins the love and gains the hand of Aldegona, the lovely Christian princess of Toledo. This great quest of forbidden love and seduction involves the unlocking of arcane secrets and ancient wisdom, fantastic spells, strange music and a conspiracy of birds. After many tests and trials, the couple’s desire to be united finally triumphs and they elope on a magic carpet bound for the kingdom of Granada - where they marry and live happily ever after as king and queen.
