SATB choir and piano, c.4'30Words taken from a letter 'home' written in 1941 by the composer's older brother, Russell Keats, while serving in HMAS Canberra during WW II. The heavy cruiser was on escort duties in the Indian Ocean with relentless temperatures of 38C but despite this he wrote graphically of the natural beauty and wonders surrounding him, words, which in themselves lent to this song. The song (that bears the same name,) from which this work has been derived, was one of remembrance upon the death of Horace Keats’ first born son killed in HMAS Canberra (1) in the Battle of Savo Island, during WWII. Accordingly it provides an opportunity to play with a strong use of legato, to convey nostalgia and longing.
