Genji (the Shining Prince) and the Koto Player
By Diana Blom
Regular price
$30.00
Violin and piano, c.8'30
The story of "The Tale of Genji" is full of musical references and is portrayed in this piece. Genji, himself, plays the wagon, a six-stringed koto considered old-fashioned in the story, while the key women in his life play the kin, a seven-stringed, unfretted koto from China. Several modes are mentioned including the richi (ryo) and ritsu modes, to indicate a change of mood. Poems which have a constant role in special conversations are described as tanka (short song), waka (long song) or simply uta (song).

The associations and rich sounds of a Malay gong, Korean gong, small Japanese gong, Japanese bells (like large sleigh bells), small Chinese gong, a necklace of very small bells worn in the Chinese dragon dance, tubular bells, tamtam and piano (inside and out), form the basis for Gong Agong. Rhythmically and texturally, the piano reflects and imitates some of the sounds before embarking on an interlocking section which draws on fragments of a Malay Terengganu gamelan piece "lagu" Perang.

The Green Man's face is often found carved in wood or stone and is usually interpreted as symbolising rebirth because of the cycle of growth being reborn each spring. This work draws on the Celtic Green Man's surroundings through use of several harmonic and metric associations. Composed 2006

The composer wrote: "Sydney dance teacher Ian Murphy tells how the Argentinean tango began in the ghettos of Buenos Aires, with dance steps grouped in 5s and 7s which worked across the music's phrasing. However, when taken to Europe, extra dance steps were invented to fit into groups of 8s. I heard a modern tango, with its faster tempo so explores the grouping of 5 within this faster tempo". The piece employs voice leading, shifting harmonies and a long melody.
