When Miriam Hyde went to the Ursuline Convent in Ashbury (a suburb of Sydney) in November 1964 to examine piano students, she was shown a nest in a rose bush, containing baby birds. She was very touched by this incident in Nature and wrote this piece promptly to send to the staff and their pupils. Two years later when it was first published, Miss Hyde sent a printed copy to the Convent. It happened to be the same time of year. She received a letter of thanks, which included this paragraph:'I love the little piece, and never walk among those roses without remembering it and its inspiration. The little birds are still around, but too wise now, ever to build again in that rose bush!'. Christine Edwards July 2016
Date of composition 1966.

Alfred Hill, the Australian composer is reputed to have said “To me there are only two kinds of music - good or bad. All old music has at one time been modern and all modern music will one day become old so why worry? Time is a great critic that puts them in their place”.
The piano compositions on this recording have been deliberately chosen because of their beauty, their inherent musicality, the craft and skill of the composers and their appeal to the listener. Not considered in their selection was any decision based on whether the style was the fashion at the time of their composition. All of the composers on this recording are Australian women who were born between 1862 and 1915.
To support this recording, Dr Jeanell Carrigan has researched and compiled three volumes of scores of these and additional piano works, most of which have not previously been published. These volumes, together with individual CDs, are available online.

Piano Concerto No 1 in E flat minor
By Miriam Hyde
Regular price
$500.00
Piano Concerto No 1 in E flat minor, c. 30'30
Composed 1932-1933
The concerto is cast in a three movement, fast-slow-fast form, with the lyrical second giving way to dance-like third. In the late Romantic tradition, the melody and its developments are the prime source of interest and the driving forces in the progress of the work. Much of the dazzling technical work in the piano parts is over a held, or prolonged chord – a typical 19th century technique.
