The year 2017 is the 75th anniversary of a number of wartime actions that heavily impacted on the world and, for us in particular, because this time it directly included Australia. To name but a few of these events; was the bombing of Darwin, which recently made the News, and yet hopefully to be acknowledged will be the sinking of HMAShips, Perth, Yarra, Canberra, Voyager, Armidale and Kuttabul, the latter sunk in the Japanese midget raid at the end of May 1942. Singapore was lost early in the year and the loss of RAAF aircrew over Germany and later in the Pacific amounted to thousands. Young American men were lost in our immediate defences I refer to the crews of USShips, Houston, Quincy, Astoria andVincennes. The last three were included, because of their loss in the Battle of Savo Island, to which I make reference in the work. The men lost in the main were all young, so leading me to the title of the work now before you “Jeunes Perdus” or Lost Youth.
The concept is to musically illustrate the decline in the lives of those born during the early 1920s as it became apparent that they too would be sent in many cases to face the ultimate sacrifice, and whilst on that journey they would not know the joys so taken for granted by those to be born some twenty years and more later. The music accompanies a cryptic narration to be spoken by the singer who will perform the concluding song “Over the Quiet Waters” written by Horace Keats.
The work includes both the Last Post and Taps, to bring suitable solemnity and acknowledgement of both Australian and Americans lost in the Savo and other actions. My aim is to mourn the sacrifices of many and to add to the solemnity of the events that should be acknowledged during the months ahead. Composed 2017

A playful conversation between two pianos - echoes the games people play, chasing each other in a display of various styles, moods and modes. Different musical genres, from the elegant waltz, to a raunchy slow boogie are wrapped in a fabric of contemporary tonal themes, the main protagonists in these “games”. Composed 1988.

A cross cultural 'comprovisation' for musician and dancer, using mainly percussion (tuned and non tuned) instruments and sound making objects. The piece is developed through an improvisation on composed motives, number sequences and irregular rhythms. This is tempered by a collaborative interaction with a dancer. The dancer listens, watches and engages with an eclectic mix of instrumental colours and textures; the musician watches, listens and responds to a vocabulary of dance gestures; chooses material according to the ebb and flow of the interaction that occurs. Jiriyai! means war cry in the Sydney language. It is dedicated to Pemulwuy, who led a resistance movement against invading Europeans.

Ideal Music Theatre work.
This work was informed and inspired by many contemporary theologians, psychologists, scientists and poets including Cynthia Bourgeault, Richard Dawkins, Richard Rohr, John Saxbee, Eckhart Tolle, and Keith Ward, and those now dead including Meister Ekhart, TS Eliot, John Greenleaf Whittier, Hafiz, G M Hopkins, Rainer Rilke, Rumi, and in particular Carl Jung. Their words have been used both as quotes and libretti throughout. Biblical texts have also been used. The work is based on the Book of Job. Inspiration also came from doctors, nursing staff and patients.
The script is loosely modelled on a miracle play. The music is enigmatic in the use of keys: Bb (be flat); C (see); C# (see sharply), B (Be); although, for the sake of variety, this idea isn’t used exclusively.
The choir of pilgrims, the quartet and many of the solos and duets by Christof and Sophia, act like a Greek chorus, commenting on the play.
Although this is conceived as a dramatised oratorio, the music could stand alone as a whole or as separate items. A second script - Faith Re-Found - (included as an addendum) is provided to hold much of the music together for performance as an oratorio with no dramatics.
