Parma Road Suite is a collection of works in nine movements describing young family life and its relationship with the land on a property
on Parma Road, Falls Creek, on the South Coast of N.S.W. Australia. Its structure from pre-dawn,
through day to night, then to dawn again (entitled Rebirth), is both literal and metaphorical as well
as containing a philosophical aspect - seeing life through the eyes of childhood's innocence and
wonderment.

At the party the children dance passionately to many tunes, represented here by a Tango followed by a Jazzy Waltz. But when night time approaches it is time to send the children off to bed to the sound of a toy soldier March. Tucked up in bed at last, the children soon fall asleep as the sounds of a gentle Lullaby permeate the evening air.

Clarinet and percussion, c.10'00The main instruments - a clarinet (aerophone) and a vibraphone (tuned metallophone) - are often competing for the same space, sometimes in strict unison, and sometimes overlaying each other. This dialogue commences with a bass drum pulse influenced by a changgo and puk ostinato heard in Korean samul nori percussion. The percussion challenges the clarinet to ?speak?, setting up a call and response interchange. This leads to restless clarinet interjections, which are interspersed with restrained vibraphone gestures. Flurries of compression are contrasted with laissez vibrer rejoinders and vice versa. The dialogue culminates in a dance-like finale.
