Flute solo, c.5'00. Grade 8Reflèts (reflections) are manifest in several ways: the piece is in three sections, slow-fast-slow, with material from the first section revisited in the third, thereby creating a rough symmetry about the centre; the principal melodies, especially in the slow movements, are turned more-or-less upside down, in the way of reflections in water (even rippley water such as the sea – la Mer).

The Reggae Suite is inspired by a variety of musical elements found in Reggae music. Groovy bass lines, swing, straight feel combinations and of the course bangs or “The Skank”. This is probably the most recognisable element of reggae music, which emphasises beats 2 and 4.

This is a fantasy styled piece. I have a soft spot for early music and in particular the works of John Dowland and J.S Bach. Many years ago I studied the lute and much of Dowland’s works. I have always enjoyed the rich harmonic textures of early music. This piece could be compared to those older fantasia styled pieces but with more of a modern twist.

The piece is based on a brief idea that is being constantly elaborated melodically and harmonically. The melody is being extended at each entry with new bass notes and arpeggios supporting it. The harmonic centre is c-sharp natural minor, and the overall effect is not excessively dissonant.
A great piece to introduce students to more advanced 21st century techniques!
