Text by Kacey Patrick-Bare. Commissioned for 20th anniversary of the Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music, Tweed Valley, NSW, September 2011. The opening section describes the coming dawn, the music is hushed until the sun first greets the mountain. The second scene provides freedom in the score for the singer and orchestra to improvise. For two pianos, five movements.U235 explores some of the implications of what appeared to be the very real threat of a nuclear conflagration during the 'Cold War' of the late 1970s and 80s with the tensions growing at alarming intensity between the US and the Soviet Union. The title refers to the isotope of uranium that, in enriched form, is used in nuclear weapon design because of its fissile nature; that is, it is capable of a chain reaction. As it happens, the numbers 2, 3 and 5 are the 2nd, 3rd and 4th integers in the Fibonacci series of numbers that forms an exponential curve analogous to that of a nuclear explosion.

Mandolin Orchestra - (mandolin I, mandolin II, mandola, acoustic guitar, bass guitar (or double bass)The use compound meter (12/8) and additive meter (13/8) throughout the piece is typical of the composer's compositional style and, in this work, creates a gentle rhythmic lilt that represents the motion of the waves on the harbour; while the sometimes wistful melodies attempt to evoke the beauty of both the natural (the water, the Botanic Gardens) and the urban (the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House) elements that combine to make this city such a memorable place.
This work was commissioned for the International Mandolin Festival Sydney 2008.
