Suggested grade 6-7Chiaroscuro, an Italian word meaning contrasts of light and dark, is also used to describe a technique in painting, usually where a dark background serves to throw lighter objects in the painting into high relief. Similarly, the sonorities of the clarinet, ranging from the rich chalumeau of the rich lower register to the dazzling brilliance of the high notes can be achieved with an aura of ease and panache which is very exciting. The Children’s Bach, an opera in two acts, was commissioned in 2008 by Chamber Made Opera, Melbourne with the aid of a Project Fellowship from the Music Board, Australia Council. The libretto was supported by The RE Ross Trust Playwrights' Script Development Awards. This recording was made at The Fitter’ s Workshop, Canberra in May 2019.
Brief Synopsis: Athena and Dexter lead an enclosed family life in Melbourne, innocent of fashion and bound by duty towards an autistic child, Billy. Their comfortable rut is disrupted by the arrival of Elizabeth, a tough nut from Dexter's past. With her sister (Vicki), fickle boyfriend (Philip) and his smart teenage daughter (Poppy), she draws the couple out into a world whose casual egotism and sexuality they had barely dreamed of. Composed by Russell Keats for his friend, Gordon Watson, 1936. Edited by Brennan Keats 2020.
This is the only surviving work of my brother Russell, the others lie with him at about 2000 feet in the ocean depths off Savo Island in his ship HMAS Canberra (1). At the insistence of our mother he took his music on what was to become Canberra’s final departure from Sydney Harbour.
As students of the Conservatorium of NSW (now Sydney Conservatorium of Music) both Russell and Gordon Watson fell under the spell of Raymond Hanson.
This work reflects the times in China during 1936, the date of its composition. Civil war prevailed between the government of the Republic of China and The Chinese Communist Party. To the writer there is a sense of foreboding in the music with an ostinato piano line almost unchanging throughout the entire work. There may also have been murmurings of Japan’s invasion of China in the year to follow that have crept into the work.
