Creative Explosion

The creative aesthetic behind this project is to have a strong intercultural focus featuring Asia-Pacific traditions of Korean samul nori drumming techniques, Filipino kulintang percussion, Japanese shakuhachi 'moment' aesthetic and East Asian string techniques (Korea, Japan, China) interacting with contemporary music. The trajectory from modern violin through to Chinese erhu and Korean kayageum techniques interacting within contemporary composition and cutting edge digital technology forms a thread behind this collection. The sound of Asia-Pacific gongs (Korea, China, Philippines) intersecting with modern percussion as an enlargement of the contemporary music tradition in performance and composition is another angle. Finally the use of the techniques of reed membrane and coloured breath from Western clarinet to Japanese shakuhachi exploring the 'single-note' aesthetic of East Asia within contemporary composition and improvisation also forms a focus. Credo (Maclean)

Part of the Osanna Mass which is based on the set of plainchants for the Mass, Kyriale IX (Cum iubilo) and several Jewish liturgical melodies. The Kyriale does not contain a credo chant, so the one used here is the oldest known credo chant, the first one in the Liber Usualis. Interwoven with the chant are a number of other melodies with symbolic associations with the credo text. The Mass won the Australian Art Music award for vocal/choral composition in 2012.
The Osanna Mass was written for the Sydney Chamber Choir, conducted by Paul Stanhope and recorded by Tall Poppies (TP219). Audio sample from the CD Osanna, used with permission.

Fortepiano and glass armonica…and can be played with alternative instrumentations such as harpsichord, piano with vibraphone or keyboard using vibraphone sound, c.3'30. Advanced level of difficulty.The melody and harmonies date back to a tiny snippet of music I wrote many years ago as a brief nostalgic waltz (which formed an interlude in a longer work) and which I have now expanded in this piece, retaining the nostalgic mood. The title is the same as the two harpsichord work and is named in honour of one of Australia’s most spectacular and beautiful birds. Composed 2018

In the first of four sections, a ‘whimsical andantino’. In the second section the interjections from Harpsichord. Two are stylised snatches of birdsong. Next there is a Tango. The last section consists of adaptation of my mandolin piece Fandangofor mandolins - a transfer of music written for one type of plucked instrument (the mandolin) to another (the harpsichord). Solo bassoon in 5 movements, c.9'00 The pied butcherbird upon which the work is based sings in rushed gusts of notes; the effect is anticipatory, like beats two-three of a Viennese waltz or beats two and four of an up-tempo bluegrass number. The angularity of the essentially five-bar phrases is appealing. Two separate voices are implied by the octave or more spread between motivic segments and the qualitative difference between the lower and higher material. Octave displacement above and beyond the original birdsong figures in the work.
