Fair Maid of the Mill, The (High)

By Bruce Daniel

Regular price $60.00 Sale

Song cycle for high voice and piano. Die Schöne Müllerin D.795

Original German text by Wilhelm Müller.

It is a story that takes its audience on a journey that is dramatic as well as musical. The songs come fully alive only as the story reveals itself to the audience in real time, as the composer intended. It is hoped that this edition may offer English-speaking singers and audiences the immediate experience that German-speakers take for granted.
The edition is a translation not of poems but of song lyrics. There have been many such attempts in the past but I have yet to see one which comes anywhere near a credible or convincing realisation of Müller’s poetry as it appears in the context of Schubert’s music. (David Miller, pianist)

Falling

By May Howlett

Regular price $35.00 Sale

For Flute ensemble, c.4'00. Grade 6
An Ode to Gallipoli and the futility of war. As in a ‘still’ photo from a movie, each soldier falls to the earth, a dying leaf from the Tree of Life. So the notes fall on the listener, slowly and wearily. We mourn our loss the more because man’s lust for power through blood will not be so easily appeased by this sacrifice. Composed 2015

Falling Petals

By Linda Dalgliesh

Regular price $30.00 Sale

Flute, Clarinet, Oboe and Bassoon, c.5:45

This piece uses various devices such as the musical round, harmonised arpeggios of diminished sevenths, and variations on pentatonic scales. It was inspired by the memory of sitting in a secluded bower by a pond, watching sakura (cherry) petals drift down onto dark water. The first half alludes to minor-key Japanese folksongs such as "Sakura Sakura" and "Tōryanse". In the second half, the lifts towards a major tonality and aspirations of hope.

Fandango - A Biography of Ann Carr-Boyd (Book)

By Kerry Anderson

Regular price $60.00 Sale

A Biography of Ann Carr-Boyd
by Kerry Anderson

‘Ann is a meticulous diarist and a writer of comprehensive lists. Rigorous discipline, then, as well as aptitude, hard work, application, as well as being gifted with talent makes this book compelling reading.

Being blessed with, and in possession of, a creative and independent spirit, Ann would have found it difficult not to ‘work’, paid or otherwise. After all, she has composed over 280 pieces of music, and painted over 80 works of art . Her love and talent for music began at an early age – at the metaphorical knees of her gifted father and uncle. Her love for, and appreciation of, art commenced commensurately – at the knee of her mother, a clever artist.’ Kerry Anderson

"... a particular strength of Kerry’s biography lies in its generous inclusion of anecdotes and commentary from Ann’s colleagues, family members, and friends. This approach guarantees a warmth and liveliness that springs off the page, revealing Ann not simply as an outstanding musical figure but also as a person who relishes interaction, liking few things better than catching up with friends or making new acquaintances."  Adrian Wintle

Scattered throughout the book are QR codes of tracks from Ann's CDs which, when using a smart phone, can be listened to and enjoyed.

Fandango Returns! CD

Music by Ann Carr-Boyd

One of the most rewarding things about writing music is the opportunity to meet and work with some of the most interesting people in the world. All the people and performers listed on these CDs (and many more who unfortunately can’t all be fitted on to two CDs) have enriched my life with their musicality and their warmth of friendship. The years I spent with the Sydney Mandolins in the 1980s and onwards were just wonderful. I wrote at least 12 different works for them - and all were rehearsed to the most high point of performance and interpretation. Little did we know at the time that Fandango would become so well known - but we have all been happy to see Fandango launch out into the world with a whole adventurous life of its own.   Ann Carr-Boyd 2018

This double compilation consists of works performed by: The Sydney Mandolins; Diana Weston, harpsichord; Danielle Grant, soprano; Tara Hashambuoy, violin; Joanne Arnott, recorder; Rita Woolhouse, cello; Paul Champion, clarinet; Tony Baldwin, piano; Edgars Kariks, flute; Susan Blake, cello; Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, conductor Arnold Butcher; Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, conductor Patrick Thomas, pianist Sally Mays; Sydney Symphony Fellows; Cedar-Rose Newman, violin; Lina Lee, violin; John Martin, piano and Ann Carr-Boyd, piano.
