Flute and piano, c4'35. Grade: Advanced (8th)
This work for flute and piano has never been published and on the manuscript, there was no composition date. It belongs to the atmospheric style of works depicting the sounds heard in a forest favoured by Phillips in many of her songs. The work is in ternary form and characterised by an interplay of melodies between the two instruments.

Grotesque - Operina
By Meta Overman
Regular price
$70.00
A one act operina (very small opera) for soprano, clarinet (or flute), four hands piano and dancer.
The score also includes a CD of the chamber works and a DVD of the first performance held at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music on 2nd April 2019 (also linked here).
Grotesque is a tragic comedy with quite an absurd plot involving an old man – the character played by the clarinettist, a young girl, sung by the soprano and a ghost whose antics are created by the sounds of the piano. Its structure is theme and variations as in the original version for piano four hands and the plot is described by a narrator. It is a little questionable whether in a performance that is staged the narrator is really necessary. In fact there is no mention of a narrator on the original score though when recording the work a narrator could be deemed necessary to outline the antics of the characters who cannot be seen. In a staged version the characters create the images and the “narration” on the score can be viewed as merely stage directions. The dancer would therefore act out the antics of the ghost and the instrumentalists would become the characters described by the stage directions. Composed 1951 rev. 1961

Violin and piano, c.9'00. Professional standard
This is a virtuosic work for violin and piano. It had never been published previously and on the manuscript, there was no composition date. As its title suggests the work belongs to those composed in a Jewish style in which Phillips established herself as one of the leading composers in Australia in the twentieth century. The work is in ternary form and characterised by an interplay of melodies between the two instruments.

Fantasy for violin and piano upon a theme of Hooper Brewster-Jones, c.8'00
It is a fantasy based on a theme by South Australian composer Hooper Brewster-Jones. The theme being the melody in the middle of the piece played by both the violin and the piano, which accompanies the theme with very lush harmony. The work opens in a very dramatic fashion, fanfare–style, and the influence of Richard Strauss or Richard Wagner is fairly obvious in the use of harmonic progressions and the density of harmony used. Alfred Hill, who would have been Holland’s main mentor in 1932 was a fanatical Wagnerite! Composed 1932
The volume includes a CD performed by Goetz Richter (violin) and Jeanell Carrigan (piano) and recorded as In Tribute (Wirr 105) available online
