Skittish in Lockdown

By Gina Ismene Chitty

Regular price $15.00 Sale

For marimba, drum set and piano, c.2'00

This piece captures the slight impatience of an adolescent in lockdown. It expresses an inwardly energetic “shout”, a simultaneous feeling of joy and annoyance, and a breaking into a dance-like trot to release the excess energy that has been building up in the young person.

The lilting jazz rhythms of the marimba and piano reflect the joy of missing school, and the strictly assertive and sparse drum-beat is reflective of a slightly annoyance at the limited scope of movement.

Smoke and Mirrors

By Diana Blom

Regular price $40.00 Sale

Tenor saxophone and marimba.  2 scores.

Through music, the title of Smoke and Mirrors has been drawn on fairly literally, rather than metaphorically, with the slow movement of smoke in circles and coils but always upward, and the repetitive eternal image created by two mirrors facing each other.

Star Cycle (vibraphone)

By Michael Hannan

Regular price $15.00 Sale

Solo Vibraphone, c.6'10

The piece is influenced by Indonesian gamelan music. There is constant series of repeated patterns (or ostinati) upon which melodic components are grafted as well as punctuating lower-pitched elements. Throughout the piece the vibraphonist plays alternating tones using only two beaters. The challenge is to integrate the ostinati, melody and punctuating tones within that limitation.

      ta-ka-tin-go-ba-kin

      By Michael Atherton

      Regular price $25.00 Sale

ta-ka-tin-go-ba-kin is presented in four percussion staves for non-pitched percussion, c.8-10 mins

Flexibility in the choice of instruments is encouraged. However, the fourth stave provides an important time-line function. Ideally, a double cowbell (gankokwe) should provide an anchor throughout epecially in the soloing sections. The "open" scoring encourages the choice of a variety of membranophones using paired sticks, stick and hand, or hands (sogo, kaganu, djembe, congas, bongos, bodhran, darabuka, gaval, bendir, changgo, davul, surdo and cuica); and idiophones such as shakers and rattles.

      Tallebudjera

      By Linda Dalgliesh

      Regular price $30.00 Sale

      For woodwinds and marimba, c.3'40

This piece is a distillation of my fishing, swimming, and birdwatching activities around Tallebudgera Creek [sic] on Queensland's Gold Coast. The creek mouth was all sandbars and flathead holes, dolphins and pelicans. The marimba represents water; the waves, tidal ebb and flow. The woodwinds represent the birds and fish. There are interweaving motifs describing the movement of the animals.

      Triptych (War Letters)

      By Diana Blom

      Regular price $80.00 Sale

For soprano, mezzo-soprano and bass voices, viola, marimba/percussion and piano.

Triptych (War Letters) begins with letters written by Frank Nestor Robinson, my great uncle, to one of his sisters, Ellie, my grandmother, as he left from New Zealand to fight in Gallipoli, 1915. They tell of why he enlisted – a duty call and friends were enlisting - waiting around for action, then in Egypt, the realisation from news brought back by the wounded, that where he and his fellow soldiers are to be sent, Gallipoli, is a field of fierce fighting and death and he will either be one of the lucky or unlucky ones. He was one of the unlucky ones. The middle part of the triptych is a December 1969 excerpt from the war diary of David Wilkins who served with Australian forces in Vietnam. He and his troop are not getting a Christmas break, fed up, and about to embark on a 7 week operation. And the third part is excerpts of Andrew Hastie’s emails (modern war letters) sent home while serving for Australia in Afghanistan, 2009. They move between descriptions of events and personal thoughts. Threaded throughout the work are three musical associations – the rolling compound metre of British/Australian nursery song, a rhythmic motive from a traditional Vietnamese musical genre, and the 7 beat grouping of an Afghan festival music.
