'This undoubtedly shows the influence of my year's study with Arthur Benjamin (Australian-born composer-pianist)  in London, 1935. In his own writing, even in the elementary works, one sees his characteristic way of using neat, interlocking figuration between the hands, with an intimate feeling for the sheer black and white pattern of the keyboard. I used to watch with interest his own deft type of pianism.
The middle section changes from the dynamic rhythmic character to one of my quasi-Spanish interludes.'

The music falls into two parts: in the first part the music is relatively slow-paced and mostly made up of chords built out of fourths, and the second part of the piece the music is fast-paced with melodic contours that rise and fall across a wide range of the keyboard.  Composed 2010

Impromobile

The composer coined the term "impromobile" to combine the idea of the musical mobile (a series of musical fragments that can be played in any order at the discretion of the performer) with the idea of improvisation. In this work the performers are each presented with ten short musical fragments and instructed to play at least eight of them in any order and to extend them all by improvisation. The performers are advised to analyse the work (both primo and secondo parts) in order to assist with the process of improvisation and facilitate ensemble coherence.
