This is a short work inspired by the modern skyline of the Chinese city of Shanghai. The music falls into two parts: in the first part the music is relatively slow-paced and mostly made up of chords built out of fourths, and the second part of the piece the music is fast-paced with melodic contours that rise and fall across a wide range of the keyboard.  Composed 2010

Impromobile

Piano for four hands, c.4'20

The composer coined the term "impromobile" to combine the idea of the musical mobile (a series of musical fragments that can be played in any order at the discretion of the performer) with the idea of improvisation. In this work the performers are each presented with ten short musical fragments and instructed to play at least eight of them in any order and to extend them all by improvisation. The performers are advised to analyse the work (both primo and secondo parts) in order to assist with the process of improvisation and facilitate ensemble coherence.

The journey through adolescence can be a dark and lonely experience and there is often a tendency for young people to immerse themselves in melancholia. In this collection, is an opportunity to give young people the experience of finding their own voice in the music.  This can be intimidating and often a gentle hand is needed to encourage stepping out beyond one’s comfort zone.  That gentle hand has been extended by making suggestions for dynamics while allowing for and encouraging personal interpretation; by allowing the opportunity for the young person to construct the music in their own way and according to their mood on any particular day; and in providing a step by step walk through rubato – often the most intimidating technique as it requires us to risk so much and put so much of ourselves out there.

    Incantations is a set of ten evocative piano pieces that are intended to be musical representations of a variety of experiences taken from everyday life. While the concept for each piece originated in experiences from my own life, I do feel the essence of these experiences is something common enough to be recognisable, and thus able to be appreciated, by almost everyone.

    Why the title ‘Incantations’? An ‘incantation’ is usually understood to be a type of formula that can be either spoken, sung or chanted, and which is intended to have a magical effect on a particular person (or even on particular objects), and it can also be something that is performed during ceremonial rituals or prayers. I think that music, in general, has many of these same qualities: music of all styles and genres can affect us personally in vividly evocative, deeply emotional, and sometimes even in remarkable and unexpected ways and, as such, I feel music can have a type of ‘magical’ or transformative effect upon us as individuals. Thus, for me, these piano pieces have an evocative power much like the inherent power of an incantation. I have also chosen to interpret the word ‘incantation’ as referring to a melody, or a melodic fragment, that is repeated not only in order to enhance its effectiveness, but also to support the generative qualities that enable its mystical powers. Thus, I have grouped these ten disparate pieces under the singular title of ‘Incantations’ because they are all based, in one form or another, on quite small amounts of melodic material that is not only repeated but is also constantly varied and expanded upon within a variety of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic contexts.

    Ingratiatingly Friendly Ghost, The

    The opening higher pitched flourish is almost immediately answered by a markedly contrasting and deeper voice. The juxtaposition of these divergent sonorities, the unfolding of germinally related thematic motives and the changing effects in the slightly “jazzical” tonality represent the interjections of the playful ghost. The contrasting higher and deeper sonorities of this piece which reflect this imagery should be played with gaiety as well as an artistic sensitivity. The damper pedal should be used to sustain some of the bass sounds, but care should be taken not to blur the changing chordal tonalities scattered throughout this humorous piece.
