Whale's Song, The

The humpback whale is, in many ways, the spirit of the ocean. Through four sections - Chant, Dance, Lament and Chant, The Whale's Song traces the migratory pattern of the humpback whale as it moves in the Pacific Ocean, through musics of New Zealand, Ecuador, Hawaii, Japan and Papua and New Guinea.  "Chant" draws on rhythms of a Maori chant about the sea, and on its return, is joined by the rhythms of a traditional Japanese chant about the sea with amplified cello evoking sounds of the humpback whale.

Whimsical Romance

Whimsical Romance for cello and piano was composed in April 2020.  It is an arrangement of the middle section of The Solitary Rag, which is a piano solo and also arranged as piano duet.  All three works were composed during the shutdown of socialising in the coronavirus crisis.

This piece takes a slightly wistful look at the pleasures of memories of places and occasions where we have been with friends and family.

Winter

Though conceived as a gentle and often meditative piece, Winter has moments of both sunlight and shadow. The title carries no specific programmatic significance, but the overall journey of the work can be likened to a winter stroll through the woods, with many twists and turns along the way. The flute and cello converse and interact in bi-modal conversation throughout, at times with considerable passion, but eventually achieve solitude in a soft and peaceful conclusion.
