Viola and piano, c.3'00, Grade 5Written as a tribute to a remarkable animal who, when the loving family she allowed to look after her moved some hundred or so miles away, turned up on the doorstep of her old home about three months after the new owners took possession. One morning, Rosie sat there, on the front door mat, waiting calmly for a greeting, for food to appear, and things to progress in their usual order, including a dive straight for the lap of the new owner, normally not a great lover of cats. But Rosie, none the worse for her long journey and ‘living rough’, soon made it clear, in her serene, unruffled way, that she was back in HER home!

Rumbalara Reserve, a pocket of rainforest with walking tracks and running trails, lies just to the east of Gosford, New South Wales, Australia. This work depicts the majesty of the escarpment, the lush beauty of the rainforest and the challenging of scaling the ever-rising walking track and stairs. It begins with a fanfare heralding the presence of the sharply rising mountain as seen from the town centre and then steadily increasing music of energy and excitement follows as one begins the walk. A triumphal conclusion brings the walk and the work to a close.

A natural rubato is felt throughout this haunting, single-movement, chamber work. Its much darker than usual instrumentation sees two violas and two cellos set against only one violin (which sometimes, like a single voice, soars high above the texture). Written in the stile antico, it opens with a “Plainsong”, then comes the main central “Anthem”. There is a brief reprise of the opening theme, before the work closes with a more emphatic “Fantasia” (where the sense of rubato becomes almost improvisatory). The work, as a whole, may be said to comprise a poignant “prayer” for strings. c.11'00
