  • Tempo A Capriccio ad libitum, Doted Crochet equals 58. Many mood changes as well as one loud sound effect. Either a sharp clap by the pianist or dropping the piano fall! Abrupt mood changes as the gull flies over the water, a full storm (lightning and thunder) concluding with a funereal dirge.

This piece conveys the idea of skimming along a surface, and bouncing up only to hit again, and gradually to run out of energy only to be skipping along again with a new burst of speed in as many musical parameters as possible.  With fast, irregular rhythms, there are harmonic considerations too. It is based on a series of pentachords, usually presented in groups of two that sometimes have notes in common.   Composed 2013.

Soldier Crab

Trio for piccolo, oboe, vibraphone, c.1'40

This piece depicts a dance between three characters on the sandflats. The soldier crab is represented by the piccolo, a shorebird by the oboe, and the sea by the vibraphone. The soldier crab pops out of the sand and begins to forage. When the shorebird comes too close, the crab spirals down into the sand, but the bird probes the sand with its long bill. The tide rises imperceptibly, filling small pools across the flats and obliterating the tracks of crab and bird.
