Mass in Phrygian Mode

This piece was inspired largely by older, modal settings of the mass such as those by Palestrina and Victoria. The melodic and polyphonic possibilities of four voices in the Phrygian Mode are explored with a focus on the strong dissonances of a minor second, tritone and minor ninth which are characteristic of the Phrygian mode.
If performed in a liturgical setting, the Creed can be omitted. This piece was written for a vocal quartet, but could be performed with more voices. If performed with more voices, many of the duet sections throughout could be performed by soloists.

There is an underlying static texture in three layers, each of three notes. Within each layer the durations of all the notes are the same, but between each layer they are different. Thus the notes of each layer phase with each other, their attacks rarely coinciding.
