These pieces contribute to the horn repertoire by providing tuneful music for solo horn that focuses on low register playing in jazz styles. The music is suitable for advanced level horn players (AMEB Grade 8 and above) and professionals.
The etudes are infused with a variety of jazzy styles, including early trad jazz, blues, hard bop, and swing band. Only etudes No.3 and No.4 use straight quavers; the other eight etudes use varying amounts of swing, depending on the style of the music.

For any solo instrument
The ten pieces respectively use the Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Dorian, Phrygian, Locrian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Dorian, and Aeolian modes. Only the Ionian mode, which is the same as the major scale, is omitted from the series.
The work is designed to introduce young musicians to the unique qualities of the interval structures of the different modes by basing all the pieces on the same note (D).
Transposition down an octave is suggested for instruments with lower ranges. The work is also suitable for singers.
