A musical story of how the water flows through creeks in the Perth Hills of Western Australia. Inspired from the surroundings and nature of these areas, the three movements share some thematic material that weaves between them symbolising the flow of the water and nature while connecting chord progressions and rhythmical patterns.

Piano Trio in six movements, c.19'00
Hiraeth is a Welsh word that roughly translates as ‘longing’. Longing for the past, a person or a place, or a sense of belonging that may just be imaginary. It’s essentially a romantic idea, which threads through 19th century poetry, music and painting. The tune from the beautiful Welsh traditional song Hireath, appears in the final movement where it becomes a valedictory signal of hope and renewed connection.

Homage to Chopin is a three-movement work which explores some of the stylistic characteristics of Chopin. The first movement is influenced by the Berceuse in its decorative right-hand figurations and also to some extent by the harmonic structure of the Nocturne in D flat Op 27 No.2. Movement II is based on the textural idea of the Prelude Op 28 No. 4: i.e., repeated and gradually chromatically-changing left-hand chords accompanying a single line right hand melody. Movement III was inspired by my love of Chopin's Mazurkas, and refers particularly to Op. 17 No. 4, Op. 63 No. 2 and Op. 68 No. 4. Composed 1990

The first has echoes of the theme music for the film, Burke and Wills; the second draws on the ambience of Koto Music I; the third acknowledges Peter's love of fourbar harmonic ostinati; the fourth, also ostinato-based, references his obsession with bird song; and the last derives from the harmonic and melodic ideas of Small Town.

Hommage D.S.C.H. these letters also correspond to the musical notes D, Eb, C, B. A quite potent sequence of notes in itself. Shostakovich has used this sequence of notes in various compositions, such as the famous 8th String Quartet, the 10th Symphony, the 15th Symphony and the ’cello concerti and other works. He has used it in various contexts and in various expressive permutations. Sometimes nostalgic, sometimes despairing, sometimes enraged, sometimes defiant. The exact “meaning” of these seemingly cryptic utterances has been debated by music scholars, musicians, and other commentators but the answer has always proved elusive. This musical “motto” has played such a significant role in Shostakovich’s music that it has been engraved, in musical notation, on the headstone of his grave at St. Petersburg
