Hot wind, red dust and rolling weeds

By Joanne Burrows

Regular price $15.00 Sale

Piano solo, Certificate of Performance, Level 2, AMEB Piano for Leisure Syllabus

This piece describes the swirls of hot dust and rolling weeds blown about in the warm, dust-filled air. The quick tempo, flourishes and unequal note groupings suggest the rolling and tumbling of the weeds over the ground. The piece builds up and down in cycles to imitate the patterns of the wind, typical in the summer afternoons. The final very soft notes suggest the easing of the wind before the next cycle starts.

Hotel Quebec Tango

By Linda Dalgliesh

Regular price $23.00 Sale

For saxophone quartet, c.2'52

This piece was inspired by an essay in the 1939 autobiography "Wind, Sand and Stars" of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. He recalls the miraculous survival of a fellow pilot, Henri Guillaumet, who disappeared while flying the mail route across the Andes and was given up for dead. Guillaumet had been caught in a high altitude snowstorm and forced to land in a remote crater. Hotel, Quebec and Tango are part of the phonetic alphabet (Alfa Bravo Charlie) used internationally by pilots. I am almost certain that Guillaumet's biplane would have had a call sign, and I like to imagine it contained the letters HQT.

3rd Edition

A comprehensive study book with illustrations, questions, activities and answers within the topic Radio, Film, Television and Multi-Media.

This book is the first in a series of books that are topic based and are suitable for study in Preliminary and HSC courses of Music in the NSW BOSTES syllabi. Each topic book explores the six concepts of music- pitch, duration, texture, tone colour, structure, dynamics and expressive techniques as well as unity and contrast.

All the exercises and questions throughout are designed to be analysed at the student’s pace and not under examination conditions. They can be used to enhance practise in writing graphic notation and aural analysis. Each listening example has a main question on which to focus, as well as the inclusion of other activities which will provide a variety of ways to approach aural analysis. At the conclusion of each listening example is a summary of the unity and contrast found within the music.

We have given our own interpretation of how each question can be approached and this can be used as a guide to the analysis of the musical themes.  Written 2016

Review by Music Teachers' Association NSW in Studio magazine February 2017.
