3rd Edition
A comprehensive study book with music examples, questions, activities and answers within the topic Rock music.
This book is the second in a series of books that are topic based and are suitable for study in Preliminary and HSC courses of Music in the NSW BOSTES syllabi.
Each topic bookl explores the six concepts of music- pitch, duration, texture, tone colour, structure, dynamics and expressive techniques as well as unity and contrast.
There are two ways to approach the analysis of each excerpt in this book: -
Part 1: Using dot points, rhythm and graphic notation.
Part 2: Written response in paragraph style.
All the exercises and questions throughout Rock Music are designed to be analysed at the student’s pace and not under examination conditions. They can be used to enhance practise in writing graphic notation and aural analysis. Each listening example has a main question on which to focus, as well as the inclusion of other activities which will provide a variety of ways to approach aural analysis.
At the conclusion of each listening example is a summary of the unity and contrast found within the music.
We have given our own interpretation of how each question can be approached and this can be used as a guide to the analysis of each musical piece.

Solo piano, c. 4'02. AMEB Grade, LMus
'This undoubtedly shows the influence of my year's study with Arthur Benjamin (Australian-born composer-pianist) in London, 1935. In his own writing, even in the elementary works, one sees his characteristic way of using neat, interlocking figuration between the hands, with an intimate feeling for the sheer black and white pattern of the keyboard. I used to watch with interest his own deft type of pianism.
The middle section changes from the dynamic rhythmic character to one of my quasi-Spanish interludes.'
Composed 1936
Recorded and performed by the composer on Piano Imagery (Wirr 084), available online.

I am black (Song of Songs)
By Andrew Schultz
Regular price
$15.00
The text is drawn from the Jerusalem Bible translation of The Song of Songs and depicts a woman's longing for her absent lover. It is unknown whether the woman is swarthy from outdoor work or black skinned racially. In the original text the sequence opens: 'I am black but lovely'. The implied social inequality of the lovers adds strongly to the poignancy of their mutual absorption.

I am She
By Tania Owens
Regular price
$15.00
I am She is a tribute to the female Goddess in all of us. It uses imagery inspired by the expansive waters of Wellington Point in Southeast Queensland where I first met and heard Leanne Swanson-McCarthy and her fellow talented musicians perform at a house concert overlooking Moreton Bay.
The water imagery speaks to me of the female spirit and the sacred role we play as mothers and as givers of life. The cycles of water in the song echoes the cycles of the female body and remind us of the greater cycles of the world and of the universe around us.
Composed 2020
Audio by Rosemarie Arthars (soprano) and Leanne Swanson-McCarthy (piano) used with permission.
